Bird Cage CoverAntique bird cages have become very popular recently. It seems there has just been a surge of people deciding to add a cage to their decorating scheme. There are many styles of antique cages that came from many time periods and places.

If you are going to collect these bird cages you should pick a type, time period, or specific theme they should have. There are so many of them that if you don’t have specific criteria like this you could end up with a whole bunch of cages that don’t match.

Victorian cages are some of the most popular styles because they are so elegant. Another very popular style is Oriental cages. These will have the traditional sweeping points coming of the corners, and some of them have intricate Oriental carvings on the sides. Very “modern” or “space-age” styled bird cages from the 40s and 50s are also in high demand.

The first thing that should be pointed out is that you should never keep a bird in an antique bird cage. As charming as this idea may be, it could be fatal for the bird. Many of these cages contain chemicals that are toxic to birds. These poisons could be in the material the cage was made from, such as brass, or in the paint that is on some of the cages.

Your antique bird cage will need to be cared for and cleaned occasionally. If you get a real antique that is worth a lot of money you should take it to a professional antique cleaner if it needs more than a gentle cleaning. Dusting the cage carefully on a regular basis will go a long way to keep it looking great. If dusting doesn’t quite do it, wiping the cage with a damp cloth and antique-care soap will probably work.

Do some research on the right way to clean the type of cage that you have. A wood cage will take different steps than a brass cage. Remember that antique cages should never be hosed off or submerged in water, no matter what they are made of or how dirty they are.

If you love the look of antique bird cages and you actually want to keep a bird in one, look into the hundreds of replicas that have come out in recent years. There are replicas of just about any time period or place of origin that you can think of.
These cages are very convincing, having all the intricacy and elegance of the originals, but most of them are safe for your pet. When you buy one be sure and check that there are no materials on the cage that could be hazardous to your bird.

Searching on the internet will give you a lot of options. Look for sellers that have a lot of positive reviews and that have been trading in antique bird cages for a long time. Since these antiques are very expensive, you don’t want to pay for one only to find out later that it isn’t authentic and the person who sold it to you has disappeared.

Take your time when looking at these cages. Wait to buy until the perfect one comes along. Then you will be completely satisfied with your purchase.
