Bird Cage Accessories When you purchase a bird cage, accessories will also be necessary for the cage maintenance and bird health. The bottom of your bird’s cage will need a lining that you can easily clean. Some bird owners use newspaper because it can easily be removed, thrown out, and replaced. Others will use wood chips or another absorbent material. Kitty litter is a poor choice because it is toxic, and a bird could eat it.

Another bird cage accessory you’ll need is a watering device for your bird. Some birds can drink out of a bottle. Others cannot operate the ball stopper in a bottle, and will require a watering dish. If you’re not sure, check with a vet or a pet store specialist before buying a watering bottle for your bird.

Of course, you’ll want a feeding dish for your bird, and perches to allow it to move about in the cage. Other bird cage accessories you may want to consider are toys and treats. Most birds need the fats available in suet to maintain a healthy diet, but they also need large helpings of protein and sugars, such as from nuts and fruit.
