There
are many bird care products available to prospective pet owners. Some
items may seem frivolous while others have immediately recognizable
uses. Unlike dogs and cats, birds have fewer items (like clothing) that
are merely decoration; and more products that are important for their
health and well being.
For instance, all birds have gizzards. A gizzard is roughly
analogous to a stomach. However, instead of being a place to digest
food with acid, it performs more of the functions that a mouth would
in humans. In most birds, a gizzard contains gravel that is used to
break up food to be passed to the true stomach. What you may not know,
is that birds kept in captivity must have gravel available to ensure
proper functioning of their gizzard. This is just one of the bird care
products a good pet owner will need to have.
Food is probably the most obvious bird care product out
there, but what you may not know is that birdseed doesn’t provide
adequate nutrients for an average bird. Birdseed is fine to put out
for wild birds because they can supplement their diet with insects,
fruit, or nectar. But for a bird in captivity, you need to add suet,
fruit, and other forms of protein in addition to the basic nutrients
provided by birdseed.
