If you are looking to become a falconer there are a few bird handling supplies you should purchase before you get your first bird. A falcon or hawk is a large investment, and you want to ensure that yours has everything it needs for a healthy life. These birds of prey have a much different diet than songbirds do, and you’ll want to look up recommendations for the species you intend to purchase before you splurge on the wrong kind of meat.

Another important aspect of bird handling supplies are the hoods you use to calm a falcon or hawk that has become agitated. You’ll also want a handler’s glove, because those talons aren’t just for show, they’re the business end of the bird. The falconry term for items such as hoods, straps, and gloves is furniture.

At one point falconry was considered distinct from hawking. The divide was fairly self explanatory. Falconry featured the use of falcons, while hawking featured the use of hawks. Both birds are raptors, and both utilize similar bird handling supplies. The persistent popular use of hawking to refer to selling items led to the generalization of falconry as the term used for hunting with any raptor or bird of prey.
