If you want your property to be home to many birds and their young, you will want to get at least one good bird house. There are many different types you can choose from, depending on what you are looking for. No matter what kind of style or design you are looking for, there is sure to be something close to it that you will be happy with.
One of the first things you want to check for when you are shopping for bird houses is the quality of them. You don’t want to spend the money on a bird house just to have it succumb to the weather or break because birds are nesting in it.
Make sure that the birdhouse you are looking at is made of a good material. Most of them are made of wood, and you just want to check that it is of a thickness that will encourage sturdiness. If the house you are looking at is made of metal, you need to check that it is made of something like stainless steel, which won’t corrode quickly. Plastic is not as common of a material, but there are some coming out that are 100% recycled, and so they are bird and eco-friendly.
Something else to check for is the ease of cleaning. A lot of bird houses are coming with fronts that open or a roof that comes off so that once the nesting season is over, you can clean out the house. This way the birds have a clean one to come back to the following year.
You want to find a bird house that has an overhang to the roof that will keep water from entering it from the rain. Making sure it has ventilation slots in the sides and drainage holes in the bottom is wise too.
One of the very best things about bird houses is that they can look like anything you want them to. If you just want a plain, old-fashioned bird house, these are very easy to get. They will add an old-time feel to your yard. There are also many primitive bird houses that are specially made to look rustic. But some people really like their birdhouses being whimsical. They can be shaped like shoes, boats, or tiny Victorian houses. There is really no limit to the styles you can get a birdhouse in.
There are some people who actually close off the hole to the bird house so that birds cannot use them. This seems very silly to most people though, because most of the time the point of the birdhouse is to attract birds.
Birds are great to have around. They are fun to watch, relaxing to listen to, and they eat bugs that would otherwise be a nuisance. By having a couple birdhouses around you encourage them to come to your property to stay. If you get birdhouses that are made to cater to different kinds of birds you will increase the chances of there being multiple species of birds around.
