If
you have a single bird, odds are you don’t need to purchase bulk
bird food. Birds are warm blooded, but their tiny bodies don’t
require nearly the amount of fuel that a dog or cat does. However, the
amount of food a dozen birds can go through is impressive. If you’re
buying tiny bags of food, not only are you likely going to the store
every couple days, you’re paying way more for your food than you
really need to.
Buying bulk bird food won’t only save time; it can
save a lot of money as well. If a hypothetical 1 lb bag of bird food
for seven dollars; and that bag lasts three days, you’d be spending
$847 a year on bird food. If a fifty pound bag lasts you five months
and costs $150 dollars from a farm wholesaler, you’d only be spending
$360 a year on food, less than half of what you’d spend buying
it 1 pound at a time! Both of those are figures you could reasonably
expect to find shopping around, and they illustrate just how much you
save by buying in bulk.
The only thing you need to be careful of when looking
at bulk bird food is spoilage. Since bird food is primarily made up
of seeds, it can go bad. Generally it takes more than a year for this
to occur, but if you’ve got one bird that goes through a pound
of feed a month, you probably won’t get through an entire 50 pound
bag of feed before it spoils. Even so, it may be cheaper to buy the
large bag, you should crunch the numbers yourself before you decide.
