One of the most important things a pet owner provides for their bird is a bird cage. Just as humans must have a comfortable, secure living space birds need to have adequate homes as well. Bird cages can sometimes be quite costly, but finding the right cage that the bird will love is an investment worth making.

Some online pet stores offer decent discounts. With a little bit of research and comparison shopping it is possible to find quality cheap bird cages. There are certain features that every bird cage needs and as long as these requirements are met there is no harm in getting a good deal on a bird cage.

Before buying a bird cage the pet owner will first need to decide where the cage will be located. This will help determine what the maximum size of cage can be purchased. The cage needs to be away from windows and drafts, but still in an area of the home where the bird will be interacted with for social development.

The size of the cage is very important. In general the largest cage possible should be purchased. Too small of a cage can cause psychological disorders. The bird should be able to walk around and fully extend and flap his wings. For smaller birds such as finches and canaries length is more important than the height since they do the majority of their flying from side to side.

The bar orientation and spacing is crucial to the safety of the bird. Small birds can have vertical bars as long as the bars are no further than a half inch apart. Birds can get their heads and bodies stuck, or possibly even escape if the spacing is too large. Larger birds should have horizontal bars. This allows them to climb for exercise.

Bird cages should always be angular in shape- such as a square or rectangle. Round cages literally drive birds crazy. In a round cage the bird will walk or climb around and around, feeling like he is never getting anywhere. Angles give the bird points of reference so he can orientate himself in his space and identify his territory.
Round cages are hard for a bird to get comfortable in as well. Often their feathers will remain in constant contact with the cage, causing irritation and wearing them down. Another con to round cages is it’s hard to find accessories that will fit properly.

A quality bird cage will be made from stainless steel and won’t chip. The cage should feel sturdy, not wobbly. Check the cage for loose parts or sharp edges. To make care easy the cage should have a pull-out tray on the bottom that can be easily removed for daily cleaning.

The door to the cage should also be secure. Birds are quite the little escape artists and if the latch is too simple they will surely figure it out. Often bird owners will have to find a way of additionally securing the cage. Pet stores will usually have bird-safe cage locks to help counter their daring attempts.

Birds also need furniture and entertainment just like humans. Perches and toys should be provided as long as they are made from safe materials. It’s also a good idea to rotate toys and move perches every month or so to give them variety and a new perspective that will keep them stimulated.

Owning a bird can be a very rewarding experience. Because they are so highly intelligent owners can bond with their bird in many ways. Many kinds of birds enjoy being handled; giving them a break from their cage and interacting with them is a great way to build a relationship with the bird.

Their cage is what makes birds feel secure and comfortable in a human’s home.

Shopping for bird cages can be overwhelming with all the options out there. Even though the cage should be considered an investment that can last the life of the bird, it’s possible to find a bargain. Cheap bird cages are out there, just do the research to make sure the cage is safe and appropriate for the bird it’s housing.
