Not all bird owners have the available budget for purchasing a top of the line cage for their pet. This is especially true of larger cages, which can often cost several hundred dollars. Fortunately, there are many companies that sell discount bird cages, some of which can be significantly less expensive than the brand name versions.
In most cases, discount bird cages are not much different than their more expensive counterparts. They can be found in small, medium and large sizes, and are usually made from the same materials; usually stainless steel and/or wrought iron. However, there are some things to look for when trying to decide on a discount cage.
Welding points are an important thing to pay attention too. Inferior welding techniques can sometimes leave sharp, jagged points and edges that can be a danger to your pet bird. And because there are so many welding points on a single cage, it is essential to carefully inspect the entire cage for any possible problem sections. Each intersection of a vertical and horizontal bar should be investigated by gently rubbing your finger over the weld. Any sharp or jagged spots should be noted.
If you do happen across a few sections with some jagged welds, all is not lost. Many discount bird cages are discounted because there might be some slight workmanship defects. This does not mean that they cannot be easily fixed. Welding defects can often be remedied with a small file and a little bit of time and effort. A light filing can eliminate these metal burrs fairly quickly, thereby making the cage safe and usable. The file will undoubtedly remove any paint that had been previously applied, and so once all the defective welds have been fixed, it might be a good idea to repaint the entire cage.
Used cages are often the best discount cages. Most local newspapers will have a pets section in the classifieds, and these are often ideal places to find used cages that are in good condition. The advantage of finding a used cage locally is that you can actually see and inspect the cage before putting down any money. There are many online sources for used cages as well, as a simple internet search will show. However, as when buying anything else online, you usually have to rely on pictures to see what kind of condition it’s in. Unfortunately, sometimes when the cage shows up you will find defects that weren’t evident in the photographs. As previously stated though, many of these can be fixed relatively easily.
If you decide to go with a used cage when searching for discount bird cages, it is important to know the history of that cage. If the bird that previously resided inside the cage died from any illnesses, take this information to heart. Any used cage should be thoroughly disinfected before it is used to house another bird, as even the smallest amount of bacteria can cause problems for the next resident.
Discount bird cages can be a great way to save some money, but it is imperative that care be taken when choosing between the various options that are available.
