Parakeets are small parrots that cover a wide range of birds. Not all parakeets are the same type of parrot. They describe small parrots with long tails that have a variety of different colored markings. They are popular pets in many areas of the world.

Parakeets can imitate sounds but not as accurately as their larger counterparts. Some medium sized parakeets are known as both parakeets and as parrots. Common breeds are the Budgerigar which are from Australia. These are the most recognizable type of parakeet.

Parakeets are easy to keep and take care of. They do not need large cages and they can roam around houses as long as there are no predators such as cats. They can be loud and noisy at times but that can often be cured by having at least two birds or a mirror for them to talk to. Otherwise they try to find other birds with their loud calls.
