Bird Cage CoverIf you get a parrot, you will want to start training it from day one. Parrot training is often a long, involved process, taking a couple hours out of each day. But once your parrot is trained, you will be more than glad that you took the time to do it properly.

Positive reinforcement is the best way to train your parrot. Using positive reinforcement will build trust between you and your parrot, and it will encourage them to continue desirable behaviors. Knowing what kind of behavior you like to see can help keep them from forming bad habits. Clicker training is a form of positive reinforcement that works very well for parrots. While negative punishment can be used for certain behaviors, it should be used sparingly in parrot training because it is not the most effective method.

There are many books and manuals on training your parrot, and there are also classes available if you have time to attend them. The best way to start with your parrot’s training is to get a book on it and start reading before you actually get your bird. This way you have a better idea of what is going to be involved and can start your parrot training right away.
