One of the most popular types of outdoor bird house is the traditional
wooden bird house. These houses are the same kinds that have been
made from kits or bought in stores for decades. They are made of treated
hard woods that are weather coated on the exterior. Weather coating
allows the house to hold up better to the seasons than untreated wood
can do.
The design for a wooden bird house is fairly simple.
There is a box with a hole in front, usually near the top. The box
is topped with a roof. The roof can be a peaked roof, but oftentimes
it is simply a roof that slopes from high in the back down to low
in the front. This means that there are fewer joints to cut, and fewer
angled end cuts to make as well.
Wooden bird houses also feature vents along the top,
and also near the bottom. These are in place to help air circulation,
which is a major concern in the heat of a summer day. You don’t
want to be baking your birds in the house, so it’s best to ensure
that they have plenty of fresh air. Vents both at the top and bottom
of the side panels ensure that no matter which way the breeze is blowing,
some of it will be routed through the house, cooling it as it passes
through.
